  • The Night Horseman

    Max Brand

Paperback (Independently published, June 16, 2020)
At the age of six Randall Byrne could name and bound every state in the Union and give the date of its admission; at nine he was conversant with Homeric Greek and Caesar; at twelve he read Aristophanes with perfect understanding of the allusions of the day and divided his leisure between Ovid and Horace; at fifteen, wearied by the simplicity of Old English and Thirteenth Century Italian, he dipped into the history of Philosophy and passed from that, naturally, into calculus and the higher mathematics; at eighteen he took an A.B. from Harvard and while idling away a pleasant summer with Hebrew and Sanscrit he delved lightly into biology and its kindred sciences, having reached the conclusion that Truth is greater than Goodness or Beauty, because it comprises both, and the whole is greater than any of its parts; at twenty-one he pocketed his Ph.D. and was touched with the fever of his first practical enthusiasm—surgery. At twenty-four he was an M.D. and a distinguished diagnostician, though he preferred work in his laboratory in his endeavor to resolve the elements into simpler forms; also he published at this time a work on anthropology whose circulation was limited to two hundred copies, and he received in return two hundred letters of congratulation from great men who had tried to read his book; at twenty-seven he collapsed one fine spring day on the floor of his laboratory.

The Night Horseman is not the common early western you'd expect. It speaks of a time long gone that many people still feel nostalgic of, and presents the magic of that time in a unique, uncommon manner that is quite characteristic of Max Brand's style. Through his descriptive writing, remarkable main character, intriguing plot and outstanding descriptions of the wild west, Brand manages to paint a well-thought out and entertaining, albeit not too realistic, picture of what it was like to face the many unknowns of the west with a sure hand.Although the story speaks of the clash between the east and west, Brand's bias toward the western character's superhuman qualities and unlikely animal companions makes for a remarkably inspiring tale. We are acquainted with Whistling Dan Barry, the main hero, and a man with near superhuman strength and an ability to speak to animals unlike anyone else had encountered before. Whistling Dan travels with a highly intelligent horse and a wolf-dog that, when standing together with this wild man, can overcome any foe. But will he be persuaded to join the love of his life, or is he going to follow his journey into the great unknown guided by wild geese?Whistling Dan is not a very usual character, albeit he is definitely up to par with the fantastic style of Max Brand. The book is one of a trilogy series that would not be uncommon to find in the extensive repertoire of more than 100 books written by Brand. For anyone who may have grown up with exciting western tales of characters who can achieve just about anything they set out to do, without caring that it may be impossible, The Night Horseman is a book worthy of much more than just a glance. Exciting, empathic and filled with the charm of the genuine old west, it will take you back to a simpler time, when man was far closer to his animal friends and the elements.
